Ukrainian Egg Decorating

Art & Design
Pysanky (Ukrainian eggs) are created using real eggshells, beeswax, and dyes. Hot beeswax is applied to the eggshell in successive layers between dips into different colors of dye. The wax is then melted off to reveal the intricate design beneath.

What inspired you to make this project?
I had a great aunt who was a nun. Every year the nuns would hand paint on hard boiled eggs for Easter. Each year my great aunt would give me an egg. The eggs were very special to me and I still have four of them. Looking through the class catalog for the Rochester Science Center, I found a class for Ukrainian egg decorating. I took the class and have been hooked ever since.
