Backyard Lander

Art & Design
My project is to build a half-size lunar lander to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon. The anniversary is July 2019. This project was the first award of the Rochester Awesome Foundation for the month of August.

I never considered myself a maker, just the person that he enjoyed making things. Woodworking, metalworking and turning. I am a longtime member of the FIRST robotics community and mentor with Greater Rochester Robotics,Team 340. A year ago I built a horse bike with an elliptical axel and legs that operated off the wheels. It was a great success, and it attracted a lot of attention in a handful of parades. I wanted the next project to be something just for fun, the lunar lander has been on my bucket list for a long time.

What inspired you to make this project?
In third grade my teacher gave me a sticker from her father that worked at Grumman on a team building the lunar lander. From that point on my interest has been science and technology. More than space or famous astronauts, my interest has always been the machines and the people that designed them. I still have that sticker. The logo for my project has been inspired by that sticker.
